What you need before you search
A case-number search wants the case type, the number and the year — all three. The type matters as much as the number: the same number exists in many types, and a number without its type is not an address for anything.

The case-number form and the filing-number form are different
This is the mistake worth avoiding. A matter before the Registrar is listed under its filing number; once registration completes it is listed and spoken of under its registration number. They are two different counters, and both are printed as number slash year, so they look identical.
eCourts has a separate search for each series. Asking the case-number form about a filing number does not return an error — it silently returns the different matter whose registration number happens to be that number. Use the search that matches the series you are holding.
